Sofia Jannok

I once long time ago wrote something shortly about Sofia Jannok, but gonna write now a bit longer post about her, because she is quite amazing artist. Sofia Jannok is a Swedish Sami person. Sami people are the indigenous people of North Scandinavia who live in Norway, Sweden and Finland. Sami people have their own language and different dialects, own flag and own governing system, but have the currency of the country they live in and speak often also the language of the country they live in. Sami people have been opressed for very long time, though they were the first being in these countries. Nowadays they have big problems when big mining companies, often foreign ones, are buying their land. That messes up everything, because reindeer herding is important income for the sami people.

You can read bit more about Sami people here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sami_people

Sofia Jannok is also active to get the message about the situation of Sami people out to other people. I watched a good TED talk of her here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GZu8xECOdw

A new album came this year from Jannok and it's called Áhpi. I have been listening it already so many times, but still love it. The songs are bit meditative sometimes. The music brings you really into the North and you can feel the same feeling when you are outside and are surrounded by a lot of snow. It is also nice that almost all the songs are in Sami language.

You can find the album in Spotify but there are only couple songs from the album in youtube or in internet somewhere else. I found this one from youtube.

Sofia Jannok and Kristian Anttila - "Golmma almmi baján"

Sofia Jannok - "Viellja Jearrá"

Sofia Jannok - "Áphi (Wide as oceans)"

Massive spaces - massive sounds

For some time already I have wanted to go to listen to an organ concert in a church or a choir. I once had the chance just randomly being at the right time to listen some organ music in a church in Rotterdam. I really loved how the sound was everywhere, in big space like in a church the sound has sooo much more height for it, it becomes overwhelming. And it's sometimes good to get this feeling of overwhelming sounds around you.

I found this handy page if you are looking for concerts in churches in Berlin/Germany. It lists quite many of them, definitely going to head up some Saturday evening to Berliner Dom to attend a concert. Berliner Dom is anyhow extremely big and I think it will be awesome! I'll post more about it after a concert, hopefully soon!

Here's the link to the website!
http://www.musikinkirchen.de

I'll just link one choir music cd just started to listen, beginning is super beautiful, oh, it is the Agnus Dei part! But have to admit that I don't know almost anything about choirmusic, so just hit choirmusic and church to youtube and see what you find!

Sacred choir music - The choir of new college, Oxford

And a real classic choice for some badass organ music!

Just breasts...

Bara Bröst is a name of a Swedish feminist group who wanted to have the same right for women to swim topless on beaches and in public pools.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bara_Br%C3%B6st

It is also a name of Berlin based DJ duo of  Benjamin Quint and Markus Schwarzbauer.
But, first I listened the set. I was like hey this is groovy and nice. But then when I saw them live it was different. The music was oke, but didn't stand up into same lenghts as the set in Soundcloud. I still though like the set in Soundcloud so wanted to share that!

And while on this...maybe when you are listening to this set you can update your knowladge about breasts here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breast

Or just stay staring this picture one hour 1 minute and 21 seconds and think why women are still oppressed nowadays.. women get smaller salaries than men, and women are very often used as objects in commercials. Since when did women became objects?! We need more strong women in this world!

And I will end it into this one:

Sing, sing, sing

I was supposed to write about Krake festival here in Berlin, but not going to yet.. Go to check out the festival it is still till weekend. I'll write about it later!

Instead I cought up with this track, it's a great remix of the world famous Benny Goodman - "Sing, sing, sing" rarely the remixes of olders songs do justice but this does, oh I love that swing!

Benny Goodman - "Sing, sing, sing (Aydio remix)"

Here is the original too:

Earcandy - Puresque

What to do when you don't have money to go out? Friends are somewhere else, or don't like the music you want to dance to? Headphones and Puresque is the answer! I don't know almost anything from this, except that he makes excellent techno and present great artists! I missed their gig some weeks ago but hope to hear this live. This guy has a FB page with six likes. Check his Soudcloud for something awesome!

At their cloud they say: "Puresque intend upon cultivating an up-tempo and dirty sound culture that is anything but digital—analogue music for analogue people."

Here is the longer answer:   And here the shorter: http://www.puresque.com/

Sometimes you have to wait long for something good

Dreamboat crusaderz - photo from momazozo.com

After two months of silence I found something really great. In the form of Dreamboat Crusaderz. Behind the name is artist Jesse Gold from USA. I randomly ended up to listen her music and was immediately hooked! Got the chance to see her gig live in Waterloo in Berlin. After listening her two albums "Convent music" (2001) and "My bed the jagged cliffs" (2013) I was mesmerized by her voice. Gold has amazingly strong voice and can sing extremely well even the highest highest notes.

She has some songs that feel very meditative, like wondering in your day dreams and then back again into more disco sounds. Looping the voice creates this dream like state where the spectators want to stay softly wrapped in. After listening the songs in internet I had high expectations for the gig. But Dreamboat Crusaderz is even better live! The voice of Gold just takes over everything in the space. The concert was in a small place so her voice didn't get into its full rights. And in some points there was problems with the microphone. Gold should have a concert in a church like space where the sound would come to its rights! The looped voice would stay echoing from the cold walls. I hadn't heard for a very long time anything even close like this. Gold's music is a fine mix of electronic sounds and almost opera like singing. Only band that came close by to in my head was Planningtorock, which is still totally different but has the same playfulness.

I also liked a lot how Gold was able to play with her voice and not staying only behind the table and decks. She actually took the audience with her. It's music where you don't dear to clap in between to brake the atmosphere what it has created.

I happily bought her newest album "My bed the jagged cliffs" and got to ask if she has sung opera before, but only got back a modest answer that she really likes opera. While I was totally sure that she must have been signing opera somewhere to master a voice like that. I think this artist will be big in the future! As in the song "I know, I know, I know, I know..."

This one is a perfect song for a sunny day. And the bandcamp site of Dreamboat Crusaderz:

Do you feel what I feel?

Really often nowdays I see that a lot of people can't anymore relate to what other people feel. They become emotionally numb in a way. This digitalism is two sided thing, it brings people closer or at least it should, while on the other hand it lets people stay in their own bubble the whole time! Have you seen those people who are dancing with their phones in the hand and chatting in FB at the same time? Have you ever counted in a bus how many people are busy with their phones. We are starting get too found of electronics around us.

Just think for a moment how the world would react if Facebook, Twitter, and the internet would go out of order for even just one day or even for a week?! I think it would cause huge huge "problems" to people. We would have millions of people who wouldn't know anymore what to do with their time. The electronics around us, especially tv kills most of the creativity and the worse, our imagination!

Why is it so that more further the years go, the more isolated we get with our electronic stuff? Also reading the news about the big solar bursts makes me wonder what would happen when a really strong solar burst would hit earth, there's a possibility that our electronics wouldn't be working for some time. Remember still how much the ash cloud from Iceland mixed up/stopped all the flights?

"For the past several years the sun had been quiet, almost too quiet. Part of that was the normal calm part of the sun’s 11-year cycle of activity. Last year, scientists started to speculate that the sun was going into an unusually quiet cycle that seems to happen maybe once a century or so.
Now that super-quiet cycle doesn’t seem as likely, Biesecker said."

Berlin Music Video Awards pt.1

Sometimes you have to wait longer for something good. I did or will actually. The Berlin music video awards will take place between 24th and 28th of April 2013. It's the first time ever this competition is held here. I saw only some of the participants, but you can check all of them at their homepage and find also links in their Facebook page.

You can buy tickets to the voting days to see all the music videos (which is my plan). Not so often you get the chance to see so many different and awesome music videos from a big screen!

They have all different kinds of videos competing. Some very beautiful, strange, awkward, cheesy or scary. I like how broad scale of videos there's going to be! Time to forget the "usual" music videos.

I'll just link some of the coolest ones I have seen so far. But there's going to be a second post for sure about the subject later on!

This had most intrigging (if that is the right word for it) voice I have heard for a while! Its the voice of the guitarist in the band called Joe Newman. I just love the sound of the voice of the singer. And the video is quite far from the usual if you watch carefully. Got many aww moments while watching this. Not gonna spoil any more than this. And the band is ∆  (the delta sign) but they have it pronounced Alt-j, which is the shortcut for delta sign in mac computers.

∆ - Alt-j - "Fitzpleasure"

Alt-j released their debut album "An Awesome wave" in 2012. Find them on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/altJ.band

Oh black and white video clips can be strange...and they don't need to be old to be black and white.
Bit Burial style.

Simple is beautiful - Eyes are captivating

I found one quite amazing song by Jessie Ware, UK singer-songwriter with a stunning presence! I've listened "Wildest moments" several times and every time I like it even more. It's amazing to see such a stunning presence, even though she is only turning in one spot during the whole song! It's incredibly strong to see that nowdays when mostly all the music videos are pumped full of special effects, backing dancers, colors, clothes, half naked people and explosions.

Jessie Ware captures something that many people try to do for years. She has her debut album out which is called "Devotion". She has also sung vocals for SBTRKT. Check her homepage here: http://jessieware.com/    And her SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/jessieware

Jessie Ware - "Wildest moments"

The power of the eyes is just mind blowing. You have the same effect in this music video that is taken in one single shot. It's from Lykke Li. Especially in the part of 3.34 she kinda looks trough you. That feeling I get from watching the video.

Lykke Li - "Tonight"

I found about Solange Knowles last week. She's the little sister of Beyonce. I was positively surprised how different and fun music she does. Very different from her sister. This song brings summer where ever you are listening this. And I love that tailor shop in a see container and the guys posing in their suits. Her homepage you can find here: http://www.solangemusic.com/

Eartha Kitt - Uska Dara

Eartha Kitt was a famous Amercian singer, cabaret artist and and an actress.
I found myself listening back Christmas songs because of sudden snowfall in The Netherlands. Kitt made also the famous "Santa baby" song but the most happy I was to find the "Turkish tale" song that I have heard somewhere when I was small because I remember only the strange lyrics that were in Turkish and went according to me like "uuskudaara äärekikke rambada biriam buu". Kitt ofcourse sang this song in Turkish that tells also quite a lot how multilingual she was!

I still totally love this song!

Eartha Kitt - "Turkish tale"

Eartha Kitt - "Oggere"

Some cool quotes and fact about her:
"Orson Welles once called her the `most exciting woman in the world.` "She took over the role of Catwoman for the third and final season of the 1960s Batman television series,
replacing Julie Newmar, who was unavailable due to other commitments."

Do you remember still Mowgli and the jungle book? Sounds bit familiar.

Eartha Kitt - "African lullaby"

The first day of the year

How would have been the first year of first year? How is your first day of the year?

I want to share this beautiful song with you. It's from Rebekka Karijord, a Norwegian artist living in Sweden at the moment. She has amazingly beautiful songs, but this has become now the most breat taking one. Check her album "The noble art of letting go" and the newest album "We become ourselves".

"On the first day of the year
I can´t help but wonder why
we´ve been apart so much last year
when it feels so good having you here

I am a fool when it comes to
expressing my love for you
and I know I´ve showed you in all ways
how doubtful I´ve been these days

But when all the birds gather
on the factory roof across the river
outside our window the sky
turns orange ´cause darkness is loosening
its grip over Stockholm
I think of how thankful I am

To be loved by you
to be loved by you
to be loved by someone like you"
